Models of Online Courses
A simple framework of three course models is presented:
  • Content and Support model - relies on separation between course content and tutorial support and characterised by rudimentary amounts of collaborative activity amongst students.

  • Wrap Around model - tailor made materials wrapped around existing materials. Online interaction and discussion occupies about half of the students' time while the content occupies the other half; a resource based approach.

  • Integrated model - collaborative activities, learning resources and joint assignments. The core of the course takes place online, contents are fluid and determined by individual and group activitiy. Relies on the creation of a learning community.

The paper goes on to provide examples from the author's own experience with the UK's Open University citing advantages and disadvantages of each model. A brief discussion of issues central (in the author's view) to online education (eg. Collaborative working, tutor workload, rolling intake versus cohort systems, sustainable models) concludes this well written presentation.
