The Online Teacher Final Report
This research report, written by Guy Kemshaw-Bell, comes from a need for NSW TAFE to identify the skills required for teachers to work effectively with their students in an online environment. The research explored literature and surveyed both teachers and students. Five skills "sets" for teachers were identified: relating to the learner in the online environment, managing the online learning environment, communicating effectively online, using online learning tools, using effective online teaching methods. Further in the report the individual skills in these sets are listed. The skills are logical and in most cases self explanatory.

Readability:
This is a very readable report in which the research methodology is transparent, allowing the reader to establish the context and credibility of the findings. It has implications for the recruitment and ongoing professional development of TAFE and other VET staff.

Recommended use:
This report provides an excellent foundation for those making decisions about appropriate professional development for teachers and other staff preparing to work online with learners. It would also be useful for the educational staff themselves as a basis for self initiated professional development.
