Sick of getting asked to facilitate work based learning projects? Want to ensure that the next one fails so you won't get asked again? Just follow these Guidelines, and failure is guaranteed!
- Don't bother meeting face to face - just use phone or email.
- If you can't get out of it, schedule any meetings outside of worktime..maybe 7.30am or on the weekend.
- Don't give anyone any time off to participate in the project.
- Meet in the workplace - don't bother with finding a different venue...just keep meeting at the same old place.
- Don't waste time or money with lunches, afternoon teas (or lollies, chocolate frogs etc.)
- Stress the time commitment and bully people to attend.
- FORCE people be part of the project - don't give them a choice.
- Overwhelm participants with details and deadlines.
- Have lots of HUGE goals.
- Don't allow the participants to be part of the process of planning their learning objectives... just tell them what they will be learning.
- Be rigid - refuse to change directions or objectives.
- Don't bother trying to make the activities relevant or related to the work context.
- Make everyone do the same activities.
- Keep participants separate - don't allow any group work.
- Intimidate people by using IT jargon.
- Ridicule participants when they don't have skill requirements...tell them they are luddites.
- Don't give any feedback.
- Don't be too encouraging.
- Demand regular, lengthy reports on progress.
- Ensure the sessions are unstructured and unplanned.
- Assume people know things.
- Tell the participants only what you think they need to know.
- Use 'old technology' ie Pentium 120 computers with Windows 95.
- Keep communication to a minimum.
- Don't ever contact the participants outside of workshop times.
- Don't allow discussion of the project around the workplace
- Ignore the LearnScope State Manager - don't bother with any reports.
- Have something more important to do...don't give the project a high priority.
- Try to do it alone - work without a Project Manager (or choose one who will soon be going on Long Service Leave)
- It's a serious business... absolutely NO fun or laughter allowed.
Great. Now get cracking!
