Hamilton Air is a problem-based mixed mode learning environment that supports the Certificate III Business. Using an airline company as a metaphor, learners are invited to engage with the personalities and challenges that characterize a small company that is fighting to maintain standards of quality across its operations.
One of the fundamentals of Hamilton Air is that it optimises the appropriate use of media. The eLearning environment is strictly reserved for activity, interactivity and exploration. A complementary set of print-based materials support the eLearning component, assuring that learners have synchronized learning pathways. The practice of simply reading from a computer screen is minimised.
The eLearning environment in Hamilton Air comprises significant challenges (tasks) that provide learners with opportunities to gather evidence to support their competence in operating in a business environment. In addition, learners are given the opportunity to learn through engaging with content that provides immediate feedback (self-tests), explore and improve policies and procedures and appraise related web sites. All of these components are located on the Hamilton Air Intranet.
Hamilton Air was built in partnership with the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind and this has ensured that it not only achieves high accessibility design standards, but also that where possible and authentic, the content is mediated in audio, visual and textual formats through the various characters that make up the Hamilton Air company.
