Swinebank - Online Banking simulation.

Pigs, Banks, what is this about? No this is not ‘having a go’ at the big banks rather it is a purpose built simulation of an online trading environment designed and developed by the Swinburne University, TAFE Division.

E-trade is a simulation of an online trading cycle. It allows students to participate in:

  • Online banking.
  • Online purchasing.
  • The trading in of second-hand goods.
  • Secure transactions and security certificates.

The simulation was developed to create a safe environment for students to get authentic experience in an online trading environment. The teachers and developers of various subjects felt that it was not appropriate or ethical to teach some e-commerce subjects without some safety features.

Some subjects in the Certificates III and IV in eBusiness:

  • BSBEB304A - Buy online
  • BSBEB305A - Sell online
  • BSBEB306A - Make payments online
  • BSBEB307A - Bank online
  • BSBEB404A - Trade online

require active participation in the online trading cycle.

It was decided to develop a functional prototype that would simulate this activity in a safe and secure environment, following recognised e-trading rules.

E-trade uses a number of technologies:

  • HTML for content
  • CSS for presentation
  • Flash for the dynamic rendering and visual presentation of the SwineCard
  • Coldfusion for functionality and database integration
  • Access database for record keeping.

There are additional little touches of personalisation such as being able to choose your own ‘skin’. This resource currently exists as a working protoype. Feedback from students and teaching staff who have used the prototype has been very positive. It has not been fully product tested and liable to change web address and functionality at any time.  There is enormous potential  for this as a ‘learning object’ to be licensed to other providers, and further developed to cover additional e-commerce functions, but for now it is a useful, safe and fun addition to Swinburne’s e-commerce courses.
