10 tips for flexible learning

I'm going to commit heresy here and state THAT YOU DONT NEED A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO DO FLEXIBLE LEARNING!!!

All you need is the willingness to do things differently.

Here's 10 tips that people can use to add a little bit of flexible learning to a teacher-led classroom based delivery model.

  1. Do you hand out or produce lecture notes or create Powerpoints? Why dont you make them available to students in "softcopy" as word files or .ppt files. burn them to CD, or put them up on a intranet or internet website.
  2. Do your students have email addresses? - collect their email addresses and produce an email newsletter on the subject - include extension studies or late breaking news.
  3. Your students dont have email addresses? show them how to get one for free using Hotmail.
  4. Create a mailing list, using www.topica.com add your students to it.
  5. Create a bulletin board for you students. there's free ones available on the 'net www.quicktopic.com
  6. Use an ANTA toolbox!
  7. Learn how to facilitate online - read Gilly Salmon's book.
  8. Use a webquest to engage your students and direct them to where you want to go - http://webquest.sdsu.edu/
  9. Get a headset/mic ($20) and record audio presentations of your lectures, or use screencam software to show your students how to do stuff on the PC
  10. Use a digital camera. insert pics into presentations, Powerpoints, handout material. even websites!

Have fun!

Peter - always a pleasure to meet one of the 'just do it' brigade. Long before the whole thin gets big enough to organise with LMSs etc - there is so much that each individual can do. Well tipped.
